Chapter Fifteen

De’vii heard about the massacre third-hand. Supposedly someone on patrol had stumbled across a couple of survivors and brought them in. In’ell, Da’aw and Pa’iim had spoken to them and one of Da’aw’s people had repeated what he’d been told to anyone who would listen. De’vii suspected that a little was embellished. Unfortunately, he didn’t know which parts.

“El’luu’s, Mo’faa’s and Ci’er’s families,” muttered Ma’ean. “All small eastern families, didn’t dip into the heart of the wilds too much. Didn’t know any of them.”

One of De’vii’s distant cousins grimaced. “Did they say what sparked the attack?”

“No,” said Ma’ean. “Probably nothing.”

A woman from Da’aw’s family shook her head. “We need to move faster.”

“Ce’li can’t be—,” started De’vii.

“She’s In’ell’s, not ours. We should at least be long gone. This pace is ridiculous.”

De’vii exchanged a look with Ma’ean, who stared back with fury in his eyes. “Then go,” snapped Ma’ean. “Da’aw is a spineless coward anyway. Always has been.”

The woman growled and stepped forward. “And Li’aa’s family is better? Oh wait, I almost forgot, she’s dead—they’re all dea—”

Ma’ean leapt at her, his dogs right behind, their snarling ringing like music in De’vii’s ears. The woman leaned back and twisted to her left, away from De’vii, away from everyone else, then brought her hand up as if she’d been anticipating Ma’ean’s attack. The blow landed glancingly off the meaty part of his shoulder and he ducked and threw himself at her middle. The two of them landed in a tangle on the ground, the fresh scent of blood slicing through the air as their dogs met in a dreadful clash.

De’vii’s cousin scrambled backwards, fingers catching the scruff of one of her dogs as it attempted to bound into the fray. De’vii pushed forward with a frustrated curse and ripped two dogs apart bare-handed before diving onto Ma’ean, attempting to pull him off of Da’aw’s woman. Teeth were engaged though, slicing clean through the woman’s belly.

“Ma’ean! Would you s—”

A giant mass of furry muscle smacked him sideways right as teeth snapped where his neck had been. He thanked Fel silently for having his back. Then he wrapped his arms around Ma’ean’s familiar body and yanked.

Ma’ean snarled and let go of the woman, twisting in De’vii’s arms to latch his teeth into the side of De’vii’s neck. De’vii jerked away at the last second, so Ma’ean’s teeth caught him lower down, away from his jugular and against his collarbone, jarring them both with the force of the bite.

They struggled, De’vii attempting to wrap his arm about Ma’ean’s throat and finally succeeding because Ma’ean’s dogs were vastly outnumbered. When he’d pushed Ma’ean’s head against the ground and knelt on his back, De’vii bent to put his mouth close to Ma’ean’s ear.

“You just about done?” he snarled.

“Get. Off.”

“I know you’re hurting—”

“Fuck you!” shouted Ma’ean.

“You want a fight,” snapped De’vii, “then let us fight. We’ll go right now and I’ll put you on the ground until you can’t get up.” He released Ma’ean then and danced back, beckoning with his fingers.
